Coast to Coast Charity Cycle
In May 2016, RTS member Billy Williams cycled from north to south Wales - a distance of over 200 miles.

The first of the ecology surveys was undertaken with the valued assistance of Mines Rescue Service.
A team of ecologists entered the tunnel via the frost covered inspection shaft at Blaencwm and walked the length of the tunnel looking for evidence of bat roosts and activity.
A monitor was left in place and will be examined to see if any species of bats are using the tunnel.
A further study will be undertaken later in the year during the migration season.

Rhondda Tunnel Society Seminar
A workshop with members of various potential partners / stakeholders took place at Afan Forest Park Visitors Centre.
Committee members of the society held group discussions with important figures including Assembly Members, Councillors, Civil Servants and representatives of bodies including National Resources Wales, Sustrans and others.

70’s Night - Disco & Quiz at the Pentre Legion, Pentre
A hugely popular and successful evening of entertainment transporting everyone back in time to the days of disco and denim.
A 70’s themed quiz started the evening rolling, followed by a charity fundraising interlude when £150 was raised for a local Childrens Diabetes charity.
Despite fancy dress being an optional requirement, almost everyone made the effort with a varying array of costumes dug out from the depths of their wardrobes!
One of the many highlights of the evening was an impromptu sing-a-long to those classic 70s TV commercials played on the big screen.

The Rhondda Tunnel Society exhibited at the Model Railway Exhibition at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. A lot of interest was shown in the tunnel, and we were grateful for the opportunity to attend an event further afield. The Rhondda Tunnel diorama sat proudly on display at the event.

The Rhondda Tunnel Society made the most of the opportunity to attend the popular Steam & Fun Day event at the South Wales Miners Museum at the Afan Forest Park. A lot of positive feedback from visitors and new members joined on the day.

Expressing a keen interest in the Rhondda Tunnel and other community led projects, actor Michael Sheen, OBE, made a visit to the sites of both tunnel portals today. Firstly stopping for an introductory presentation at the White Dragon, Treorchy, he travelled on to Blaencwm to view the location of the buried portal. Following a quick cup of coffee and a chat at the Hendrewen, he was escorted to Blaengwynfi for a delicious light lunch at the Tunnel Hotel and shown the site of the landscaped Blaengwynfi portal.
We are extremely grateful for Michael Sheen to fit us into his tight schedule, and for the opportunity to speak with us.

Committee members had a positive meeting with Gwyn Smith of Sustrans Cymru. Sustrans appear as keen as the Rhondda Tunnel Society members to re-open the disused Rhondda Tunnel, and will do all they can to assist us in achieving our vision. The Rhondda Tunnel will be instrumental in linking the National Cycle Network - Route 882 with the popular Afan Forest Park and beyond.

Rhondda Tunnel Society were present at a well attended Emergency Services Fun Day at Ystradfechan Park, Treorchy. With funds being raised for Ysgol Hen Felin.

Unveiling the Stone
A well-attended ceremony revealed to the public the refaced Blaencwm portal stone at Treherbert Station.
The Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Cllr John Watts unveiled the stone and, along with other prominent guests, including Chris Bryant MP, Bethan Jenkins & Leighton Andrews AMs, and Treherbert Councillor Geraint Davies, gave supporting speeches.
The crowds were entertained with a medley of songs from Penyrenglyn School Choir, and music from a brass quintet led by Craig Roberts.
Thanks to all who contributed to making the ceremony such a success.

A successful 'Hits from the Musicals' show was held at the Phoenix Community Theatre, Ton Pentre.
Amazing musical and vocal talent on stage, performing to an audience of supporters of the Tunnel Vision - including many local politicians, councillors and business representatives alongside the general public.

Society members met with Plaid Cymru's leader Leanne Wood AM, Jill Evans MEP, Bethan Jenkins AM and Cllr Shelley Rees-Owen (candidate for Rhondda constituency) at the site of the Blaencwm entrance to the Rhondda Tunnel.
Refreshments were once again provided by the Hendrewen Hotel where promotional videos showing the tunnel vision and a slide-show of tunnel images were played to guests.

A group of society members met with Leighton Andrews, Assembly Member for the Rhondda, at the site of the Blaencwm entrance to discuss the campaign to re-open The Rhondda Tunnel.
Leighton Andrews announced at The Hendrewen Hotel that he and core members of the group would be meeting with Welsh Assembly Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, Edwina Hart, to discuss furthering the tunnel project.
